April 13 – 27, 2023

This curatorial project explores the role of friendship in art collectives and collaborative art practices. Friendship plays an integral role in society as it allows individuals outside of traditional lines of filiation to develop meaningful connections with each other. Not too hot, Not too cold proposes friendship as a critical relationship that both provides structures of care for artists and possibilities for exhibiting collective practices. An assorted soft archive of Correspondence Archive, Friend of a Friend, Risolana, and KUNCI Study Forum & Collective will be presented—in an effort to exhibit each group’s friendships and art practice. One moderated public conversation inquiring into friendship and collectivity will take place Friday, April 14, 3 pm – 5 pm at SVA CP Project Space with a continuing conversation and zine making workshop at Asia Art Archive in America as integral parts of Not too hot, Not too cold.

Correspondence Archive is an ongoing compilation of conversations between artists of color and is organized by artist Alex Paik. Many of these conversations take place between artists who are also friends. Initiated by Armando Guadalupe Cortés and Hyeree Christina Mary Ro, Friend of a Friend is a yearly gathering that brings together artists and writers who are connected to each other by mutual friends. Risolana is a community risograph studio based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was founded by Michael Lopez and Karl Orozco. KUNCI Study Forum & Collective was founded in 1999 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. KUNCI’s practice emphasizes collectivizing study through space-making, discussions, a library, research, publications, and organizing. By putting their works in conversation with each other in Not too hot, Not too cold, lines of friendships are illuminated and practiced.
