cardboard: a meditation on medium gathers five artists who elevate cardboard from substrate to subject, unleashing its structural and aesthetic qualities to probe at the friction between artistic expression and what is known formally as craft. In the face of our shared climate crisis, artists have been confronting the toxicity and environmental impact of their materials, making cardboard an excellent option for promoting ecological and financial sustainability.
Brett Park references twenty-first century fashion trends and traditional Korean hanbok to construct a hybrid garment made entirely from cardboard, while Corrie Beth Hogg transforms boxes that arrive at her front door into modern vases inspired by classical forms. Elise Wulff’s playful animals explore the richness of texture and the sculptural possibilities of the medium. Ray Baker and Stan Linder’s intricate “Circlsculpts” series is a product of their nimble manipulation of cardboard strips to create mesmerizing and dynamic wall panels.
Working at the crossroads between craft and fine art, these artists tame the tensions emerging from this fraught junction to make innovative and thoughtful art objects from cardboard.
