CP Projects Space at the School of Visual Arts is pleased to present Welcome to Wonderland, curated by MA Curatorial Practice student Zihan Zhang.
The heart of Welcome to Wonderland lies in unraveling the genesis and metamorphosis of artists’ identities, presenting a visual narrative that transcends conventional boundaries. The exhibition delves into the profound yearning for connection, inviting viewers to explore the intricate resonance between the artists’ crafted world and their own perceptual experiences.
Tina Mitchell’s artworks draw from childhood memories of an amusement park, creating a vibrant world reflecting the innocence of her inner child and memories, offering varied perspectives on the art world. Yanmei Jiang’s character-creating paintings explore and transform her identity as a female artist with a Chinese background, portraying a strong and free Asian girl inspired by childhood fantasy and present reality. Yong Eun (May) Kwon’s paintings and sculptures feature “Fish Daegari,” a fish-human hybrid embodying her primal self within an artistic realm, playfully expressing latent desires and establishing a utopia-like fantasy world for uninhibited self-articulation. Calvin Kim's series revolves around a mouthless cat, acting as a vessel for his concealed emotions and memories within a fantastical artistic realm, inviting the audience to collectively experience and accept myriad emotions.
Beyond a mere display of art, Welcome to Wonderland serves as a gateway to the depths of each artist's imaginative universe. Each artwork functions as a catalyst, prompting contemplation of latent emotions and encouraging introspection. The overarching goal is to create a space for viewers to explore their own concealed emotional landscapes, fostering a more inclusive and enriching sense of self.
